Future Places. Porto, Portugal, 2009

An outcomes document from the Interface Design for Mobile Devices workshop is now available [5.7 MB PDF].
Teams developed projects in user interface design and information structures for using mobile devices to explore a physical location, the Serralves Foundation in Porto. The workshop was held October 7-9 at Serralves as part of the Future Places festival.

Marking the closing of the exhibition, the Future Places 2008 exhibition catalog is now online. It is a wiki, meaning applicants are themselves responsible for the content of their own pages. We are still awaiting a few contributions, and the jury will insert comments soon. So check often.

We are now going through big amounts of audio, photo and video coverage of the festival that attendants were kind enough to provide. Stephan Baumann has been raving about his Future Places experience on his blog. It is good to see how the Festival can begin branching into very diverse scientific and creative areas – away from territorial defensiveness yet avoiding the trap of the melting pot for the sake of the melting pot.

After all the activity last week, Future Places continues: the exhibition remains open to the public until the 19th. There is also an online exhibition catalog in preparation, and there are lots of footage and content which are currently being edited and willl surface regularly. Yesterday´s closing party at Casa da Música went well into the early hours. The Impromptu All-Stars Orchestra played for 3 hours and welcomed many in the audience into its ranks! Recordings will surface, no doubt.

The results are out: the Future Places jury, consisting of Philip Dean, Geoff Marslett and André Rangel, has commended all applicants on the overall quality of the work submitted. Out of these, this year´s prizes were awarded to:
