Research Projects

These pages describe research projects funded by the FCT and supported by the Digital Media program of the UT Austin | Portugal Colab.

“Kinetic Controller Driven Adaptive and Dynamic Music Composition Systems”

Under the Digital Media division of the UT-Portugal project, a team that includes Carlos Guedes (ESMAE), Tomas Henriques (Univ. of Lisbon), Fabien Gouyon (researcher, Porto), Bruce Pennycook (UT Austin) along with the corporate partner, Ivan Franco of Y-Dreams (Lisbon) have received a research grant over two years to develop methodologies and software for automatic music creation. The project will also examine novel ways to utilize products such as the iPhone as musical control devices. The research will be conducted in Austin, Porto and Lisbon.

“Digital Inclusion and participation”

A second project under the Digital media component of the UT-Portugal project explores the conditions and behaviors of users and non-users of digital media. The focus is particularly on families and groups who are currently excluded from online access. This project is led by Dr. Cristina Ponte (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), Joe Straubhaar (University of Texas at Austin) and José Azevedo (Universidade do Poto).
