Digital media events in Portugal and Austin

On the heels of SXSW Interactive 2008, it’s time to look ahead to other events coming up in Portugal and Austin.

Ana already mentioned Offf 2008, the “International Festival for the Post-Digital Creation Culture” which is moving from its usual Barcelona location to Lisbon May 8-10.

Other major digital media events scheduled in Portugal:

Indie Lisboa, the 5th International Independent Film Festival, April 24 through May 4 in Lisbon.

WikiSym 2008, the 4th International Symposium on Wikis, September 8-10 in Porto (in cooperation with ACM SIGWEB).

U.Frame, International Academic Film Festival, October 1-5 in Porto (with special competition categories for works made in Second Life and “light media” shot with mobile phones).

Encontro sobre Web 2.0, October 10 at U.Minho in Braga.

SHiFT 2008, Social and Human Ideas for Technology, October 15 to 17 in Lisbon.

On the Austin side there are always many small self-organized events, this being the age of the “unconference,” but perhaps the biggest digital media event on the horizon is the Austin Game Developers Conference September 5-7. And it’s not too early to mark your calendars for next year’s South By Southwest Interactive, March 13-17, 2009.

How to keep up with these things? Well, one way is Upcoming, the community-based event calendar now owned by Yahoo. Upcoming hasn’t yet taken off among the public at large, which is a blessing for the digital media community: you’ll find much more comprehensive listings of digital events than, say, sporting events. Upcoming is both geolocation-aware and social; it allows you to keep track of events in a particular place and events of interest to your friends. For example, here are the Upcoming listings for Austin and Portugal, and if you’re looking for someone to “friend” in Upcoming’s social network, feel free to start with me.

What events have I missed? Please reply in the comments and we’ll add them to the list in the sidebar – and maybe throw them into Upcoming for good measure.
